Visitors to Hartlepool are always surprised and entranced by the ancient headland , home to Hartlepool’s Heugh Battery museum, Situated on the seafront overlooking the North sea the Battery affords a commanding position which explains why it has been fortified for over two hundred years.
Nationally famous as the only Battery inEngland to fire its guns in anger during the First World War against Battle cruisers of the German High Seas Fleet, and where the death of the first British soldier to be killed in action during that war occurred, the restored Battery is now home to an extensive collection of artillery and also houses a growing collection of memorabilia relating to the country at war.
The visitor experience begins upon entering the restored Barrack room which contains touch screens depicting the story of the bombardment of Hartlepool in 1914 and many artefacts relating to that period. And continues into the parade ground which displays the actual Battery positions. This also includes underground magazines and a Trench Exhibition with audio visual interpretation.
Our visitors also enjoy a stay at our licensed coffee shop where they can observe staff restoring artefacts in the adjoining workshop.
